Always Be a Child, NYC-based Illustrator Sewing Feng

Sewing Feng is a New York-based illustrator who grew up in China. She began her graduate study at FIT in 2019. Most of her works are based on traditional Asian culture and inner emotions. She likes to use numerous lines and mysterious colors to create weird and unrealistic worlds. Most of her works convey a lot of emotion and power and were recognized by the World Illustration Awards, 3 x 3 Illustration Show, JIA Illustration Awards Annual and Illustration West, etc.

Thank you for joining us, Sewing. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m an illustrator and tattoo artist, currently working in New York. I graduated from the illustration department of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York last year. I enjoy creating children’s illustrations and small comics.

What brings you to art? What ideas are you exploring?

I have loved drawing since I was a child, and I also have a strong passion for collecting cute or beautiful plush toys, as well as food and stationery packaging papers. But it wasn’t until I was about to finish college that I thought of turning drawing into my career. I realized that if I had to choose one thing to do for a lifetime, it had to be drawing. I am currently exploring how to balance my work and life because I’ve been feeling anxious lately.

Do you have any specific topic or theme that you are currently interested in?

One of the themes I’m most interested in right now is mysterious stories. I love surreal things like ghost stories, fairy tales, magic, and mythology, among others. I particularly enjoy drawing animals, children, and anything whimsical and quirky.
