“Shedding Light: Art Exhibition 2024” opens on May 2nd, 2024. This exhibition is curated by Dr. Zhijian Qian. It represents part of a larger effort, “Shedding Light: A Celebration of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Jewish Cultures”, funded by the City University of New York’s Anti-Hate Initiative grant, and is being held in conjunction with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The celebration also includes a presentation on “Kindertransport”, an AAPI Anti-Hate conference, music performances, a shadow puppet theatre, student-produced video stories, a digital map display, a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, a student-produced kimono display, and other interactive activities.
The art exhibition features ten Asian American artists whose works highlight the inspiring creativity of an often-underrepresented art community and showcase the influence of their cultural heritage. Two of Qiang Li’s large-scale installation works, Silent Sea, and Rootless Tress, created specifically for this exhibition, are inspired by the artist’s observation of recent migrant waves. City Tech professor Nazanin Hedayat Munroe’s installation work Screened Off involves collaboration with her students, many of whom come from immigrant families. Larry Tung’s video installation Still Searching for Justice for Vincent Chin brings back the painful memory of the tragic killing of Vincent Jen Chin in 1982. Jianshu Song’s sculptural installation Live Free or Die is dedicated to new migrants who risk their lives to flee from their home countries for free lives. Weixian Jiang and Feng Zhang’s sculptural works exemplify their longtime experimentation with formal elements and cultural meanings. The digital short film The Egg, by Zilan Lin, Qi Lu and Yan Xu, explores the meaning of life through the incarnation of a symbolic egg. Annie Yuan Zhuang’s installation N Train illustrates riders’ experience of the New York City subway system through its signature visual and audio elements.
