China Institute in America, Accent Society, and Yue-Sai Kan One World Foundation proudly present a celebration for the launch of Yue-Sai Kan’s new book The Most Famous Woman in China and How She Did it

The evening will feature a panel discussion with Yue-Sai KanXiaoyu and Princess of Chinatown , representing three generations of female creators, entrepreneurs, and influencers. Moderated by Na Zhong and Jiaoyang Li, the conversation will discuss women’s relationships with beauty, fashion, power, and money. Guests will also experience a curated exhibition of antique Yue-Sai Wawa (Chinese dolls), a mini live fashion show showcasing new Chinese fashion stars, and a book-signing afterparty with snacks and music inspired by Chinese beauty. Join us on Tuesday August 13 for an unforgettable night of conversation, food, and fashion as we honor Yue-Sai Kan, the most famous woman in China who continues to inspire strength and beauty in us all.  

The event will be conducted in English.

Emmy-Winning TV Host, Entrepreneur, Fashion Icon, Bestselling Author, and Humanitarian

Yue-Sai Kan (靳羽西) is an Emmy-winning television host and producer, successful entrepreneur, fashion icon, bestselling author and humanitarian. People magazine called her “the most famous woman in China” and Time magazine proclaimed her “the Queen of the Middle Kingdom.” In 1972, Yue-Sai created the weekly television series “Looking East”, the first of its kind to introduce Asian cultures and customs to American audiences. “One World” aired on China’s national television network CCTV, with a weekly viewership of 400 million. It was then the first time a non-Chinese citizen hosted a TV series in China and made her a household name. With her broadcast in both China and the United States, she was then the most watched woman in the world!

Xiaoyu

Influential Writer, Radio Host, Cultural Entrepreneur, and Founder of LA VIE Space

Xiaoyu (晓昱) is an influential writer, radio host, and cultural entrepreneur based in New York and Shenzhen. She is the founder of LA VIE Space, a cultural landmark in Shenzhen that combines a bookstore, restaurant, designer’s shop and art gallery. Her cross-cultural initiatives extend to founding the “Utopia Fund” and publishing the Utopia Translation Series. And the China Cup Sailing Tournament, China’s first international major sailing event, integrates sports, business, culture, art, and philanthropy, earning recognition as the best sailing event in the Asia-Pacific region.

Zhiqing Zhang

Multi-Disciplinary Artist, Fashion Designer, and “Princess of Chinatown”

Zhiqing Zhang (晴), also known as “Princess of Chinatown”, is a multi-disciplinary artist and fashion designer currently based in New York. Zhiqing’s works focus on exploring gender, self-expression, queer bodies and LGBTQ+ community culture. Her design centers around the reinterpretation of Chinese traditional culture and symbolism. Her artistic creations integrate multiple fields, including clothing, makeup, styling, film, performance and more. Zhiqing’s work has been featured in Dazed, VOGUE, V Magazine,1 Granary, NOWNESS, Evening Standard and many other media outlets.

Na Zhong

Fiction Writer, Translator, and Co-Founder of Accent Accent Inc.

Na Zhong (钟娜)is a fiction writer and translator based in New York. A MacDowell Fellow and Center for Fiction Emerging Writer Fellow, she has published with The Kenyon Review, Guernica, Carve, A Public Space, Lit Hub, among others. she is the Chinese translator of Sally Rooney’s three novels. She serves as a columnist at China Books Review, a host of 跳岛FM which now has 300,000 listeners. She is the co-founder of Accent Accent Inc.

Jiaoyang Li

Poet, Wedding Minister, and Co-Founder of Accent Accent Inc.

Jiaoyang Li (李骄阳) is a poet, and wedding minister based in New York.  Her work has been showcased by The Los Angeles Review, Life Magazine, T Magazine China, Leap Magzine, Art Forum among others.  She has received grants and support from New York Foundation For the Arts, the British Council, Pen America, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and others. She was selected by AACYF as 30 under 30 Culture and Media Youth Elite.  She is the co-founder of Accent Accent Inc.
