(Manhattan, NY) Chinese American Arts Council/Gallery 456 is pleased to present Lulu Luyao Chang: little knots in my hair, curated by Eunice Yuyue Chen, on view from November 1 through November 15, 2024.
The reproduction and development of cells serve as both a prelude to death and an elegy for rebirth, evoking the endless cycle of growth and decay. Within the fluid container of the body, the entanglements of life never cease: those little knots in hair hover at the threshold between emergence and decline, soft yet taut, resting on skin-like color sculptures. little knots in my hair is a metaphor for the unwelcome elements that grow subtly and remain unfelt, yet, once noticed, irritate the skin like quiet itches turning into relentless discomfort.
Chang’s solo exhibition showcases her latest drawings, sculptures, and a new installation edition, exploring the dialogue between body and space, creating a malleable form in flux through soft hair, vibrant colors, dynamic patterns, and delicate paper clay textures. In the new installation Warm Bed (2024), eighteen sculptures are displayed not as static symbols confined to a bed but as architectural spaces suspended by chains. These sculptures embody fractured vessels of utopian dreams, intertwined with the promise of stability and the burden of constraint, tracing shifting contours of time and space. The exhibition space presents a process of collapse and renewal, where imperceptible forces gradually emerge, transform, and dissolve.

About Artist
Lulu Luyao Chang (b. 1996, Hyogo, Japan) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago and New York City, working in installation, sculpture, and video to explore social norms and repressions. She holds a BA in Art History from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She was awarded the ArtTable Fellowship in 2022 and has served as a panelist for The State of LGBTQ of China by The China Project. Her work has appeared in Art Fair | Detroit, Zero Art Fair, Latitude Gallery, IRL Gallery, LatchKey Gallery, and in screenings by The China Project. Chang’s writing includes publications in World Art and a co-authored article in GUERNICA.
About Curator
Eunice Yuyue Chen is an independent curator and researcher in New York City. She earned her M.A. in Curatorial Practice from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2023, and holds a B.S. from Chongqing University and an M.M. in finance and accounting from the University of Melbourne. Her curatorial work has been shown in Level Gallery and Rockella Space in Ridgewood, Accent Sisters in Jersey City, CP Space in Manhattan, and the Pfizer Building in Brooklyn. She has also held positions at Ridgewood Open Studio 2024 in New York, Bergen Assembly 2022 in Norway, and other international art institutions. Her practice centers on themes of mobility, memory, and environmental justice, engaging local communities through interdisciplinary discourses.
