She firmly believes that despite the world’s uncertainty and contradictions, we can still find positive thinking and the power of hope within it. Although she holds a pessimistic view of reality, she hopes to express a positive mindset through her works, inspiring viewers to reflect on their inner thoughts and engage in self-exploration.
In her work, she is deeply influenced by romanticism, melancholic emotions, and the presence of divinity and supernatural forces. Through her art, she aims to convey these emotions and beliefs, exploring their meaning and value in the human soul.
Thank you for joining us for the interview, Tong. Could you please introduce yourself?
I am a visual artist deeply influenced by Romanticism, exploring themes of identity, emotion, and the conflicts within the human soul. My work blends sculpture with canvas to break traditional boundaries, creating layered experiences that reflect the complexities of life—desire, fragmentation, and rebirth.
Inspired by nature, ruins, and the mysterious, I use symbols like humans, mythical beings, and monsters to capture the clash between tradition and modernity.
How do you approach color or texture in your work?
In my work, I approach color and texture to evoke nature’s mystery and create a sense of wonder. I often use deep, mysterious blue tones to construct dreamlike and fantastical worlds, inviting viewers to explore the unknown. Texture plays a crucial role in my creations—I incorporate resin to mimic the shapes and forms of real plants or animals, blending organic elements with surreal imagery. This combination allows me to explore the relationships between characters, scenes, and the complexities of the human mind. While I hold a somewhat pessimistic view of reality, I use these colors and textures to express hope and positivity, encouraging viewers to reflect on their inner emotions and discover their ownpaths of self-exploration.
Could you share some of your proudest works and why they are meaningful?
One of my proudest achievements in my art is my ongoing exploration of combining sculpture with canvas. This approach has opened up new creative possibilities and led to exciting progress in my work. My art reflects my love for nature, ruins, and the mysterious, often incorporating elements such as humans, monsters, and mythical beings. These components allow me to explore themes of desire, fragmentation, and the complexities of life. Each piece represents a world of its own, where I strive to capture raw emotions and invite viewers to engage with the deeper layers of the human experience.
How has your art-making approach evolved, and what discoveries have shaped your practice?
My art-making approach has evolved significantly over time, particularly through my experiments with materials and techniques. In the past, I worked with resin but found the results to be unsatisfying.
Recently, I began combining various materials with sculptural elements, which has greatly enriched the texture and depth of my work. This integration has allowed me to break traditional boundaries and develop a more unique and personal style. Through continuous exploration, I’ve discovered that blending sculpture and canvas creates a layered experience that better conveys the emotions and complexities I aim to express. This ongoing evolution keeps me excited and motivated to push my creative boundaries further.
What does “community” mean to you? Does community, art-related or otherwise, influence your work?
To me, “community” is a space where connections are forged, emotions are shared, and individuals find a sense of belonging. Whether art-related or otherwise, the community plays a vital role in my work. It inspires collective experiences, shared histories, and diverse perspectives. The themes I explore— desire, fragmentation, and the complexities of life—are deeply rooted in the human condition, something we all navigate within our communities.
Romanticism and my love for nature, ruins, and the mysterious are shaped by the collective memories and stories of those around me. Community influences not just the content of my work but also its purpose—to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and foster understanding. By breaking traditional boundaries in my art, I hope to create a dialogue that connects individuals to these shared experiences and to each other, enriching both the work and the community it engages.
Do you have any advice that you would offer to others?
My advice is to express your emotions sincerely and let your work reflect what truly moves you— whether it’s passion, struggles, or your unique perspective. At the same time, stay connected with others and draw inspiration from community and conversations, as they can enrich your creations. Lastly, be patient with yourself and have confidence in your journey.
