(Brooklyn, NY) Parallels and Polarities delves into the intersection of personal experiences and societal forces, unveiling the intricate layers of human existence. Lam explores themes of confinement, connection, and transformation through a fusion of abstract and symbolic visual languages. Her innovative approach challenges traditional modes of perception, expanding the boundaries of visual art to offer a deeply immersive and reflective experience.
Rooted in her guiding philosophy, “To understand the world is to understand oneself,” Lam examines the complex relationship between individual and collective existence. Drawing inspiration from philosophical figures such as Leo Tolstoy and Simone Weil, she intertwines their reflections on oppression, morality, and spiritual freedom into her work. Tolstoy’s emphasis on empathy and the human experience informs her exploration of personal and shared struggles, while Weil’s analysis of systemic oppression provides a framework for investigating how societal forces shape the body and mind. Lam’s art confronts the psychological and physical constraints imposed by modern society, particularly those stemming from the relentless flow of digital information.
In the digital age, Lam identifies a paradox: while we have unprecedented access to information, we face increasing psychological and physical confinement. This tension between liberation and suppression is central to her work. By examining how censorship, social control, and information flow intertwine, she exposes contemporary existence’s stagnation and repression. Her abstract and fragmented visual style mirrors this paradox, conveying the struggles between freedom and confinement, movement and stillness, in an ever-shifting modern world.
Through fluid brushstrokes and layered textures, Lam captures the interplay of systemic oppression and individual resilience. Her works invite viewers to engage on both personal and universal levels, reflecting on external realities and internal conflicts. Each piece resonates with emotional depth and intellectual insight, offering a profound commentary on the human condition while encouraging personal interpretation.
Lam’s debut solo exhibition, Parallels and Polarities at A Space Gallery, encapsulates her distinctive artistic vision and addresses pressing contemporary issues. By bridging personal narratives with broader sociopolitical themes, Lam’s work invites audiences into a contemplative space that examines the forces shaping physical and psychological realities in an increasingly interconnected digital era.
