Art Show | In the Mood for Love: Women’s Group Exhibition at VillageOne Art

Poster credit: VillageOneArt

(New York, NY) 21 women artists working across global frameworks in Asia and North America feature in this third presentation of this traditional women’s group exhibition echoing themes present in Wong Kar Wai’s influential film, IntheMoodforLove. This pivotal group exhibit is on view March-April 2025 at VillageOneArt. Very distinctly featuring either representational or abstract artwork, with very little commingling in this survey exhibit, this show presents a range of women working at the forefront of expressive and gestural trends present in the contemporary art world today.

Paintings by Chen Leru and Angela Gram center animal forms in vibrant tones and hues, perhaps commenting on people or places through the eyes of beasts both wild and domestic. Flora permeates in the paintings of Luo Min and Song Xin, with an enticing emphasis on visual texture and references to – and departures from – traditional forms of Eastern and Western schools of painting. Abstraction forms a through line connecting a range of visual stylings in works by Shen Cai, Geraldine Neuwirth, Chen Jia, Ou Pei and Jane Philips, with varying degrees of mark-making, monochromatic and geometric approaches embedded in these artists’ practices.

Sculptural work by Julia Shen and Zhang Yanzi offer alternate perspectives of three dimensional artwork as avenues for figuration or abstract evocations of the body, while Zhang Chunyang, Heather Im, Song Xiangni and Orange Li embrace the body of their subjects and depict these figures with relative levels of gestural abstraction occluding or enhancing the scenes which they inhabit.

Harnessing their undeniably unique perspectives to bring a range of vibrant artistic practices to the forefront, each artist invaluably contributes to this formidable survey of contemporary women artists boldly pushing boundaries toward an expressive artistic future.
