(Hong Kong, April 9 2026) – The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) is pleased to announce the 30 artists shortlisted for The 2026 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, the 22nd edition of Asia’s most coveted award in  contemporary art. As well as providing artists with international recognition and generous financial prizes,  The Prize is an important charitable endeavour, raising substantial funds to support disadvantaged children  by selling finalists’ artworks.

The shortlist features a diverse range of works by leading contemporary artists from 12 different countries and  territories around the Asia-Pacific region, including Michele Chu, ANUnaran Jargalsaikhan, and Zhang Yanzi  represented by leading Hong Kong galleries PHD Group, 10 Chancery Lane and Ora-Ora Gallery respectively  – as well as prominent regional artists Citra Sasmita, represented by Yeo Workshop (Singapore), and Sangita  Maity represented by Shrine Empire Art Gallery (India). India has the strongest representation among the  finalists, with six artists shortlisted, followed closely by Australia and Mainland China.

Among the shortlisted artists is Jiannan Wu, a Chinese artist whose practice explores contemporary urban life, media, politics, sports, and personal memory through playful yet incisive staged narratives. Living and working between China and the United States, Wu is known for combining realist craftsmanship with theatrical and satirical compositions that examine the unstable boundary between lived reality and its representation. His shortlisted work, Feb. News, nominated by Gary Mok, reflects these concerns through the format of a vintage television set transformed into a sculptural meditation on media, spectacle, and perception.

The final artworks were selected from a pool of over 250 entries by 145 artists, nominated by 46 independent  professionals, as well as 16 professional galleries invited to participate for the first time by putting forward artists  via an internal nominating committee. This year’s judging panel comprises writer, curator and museum director  David Elliott (Chair Judge); 2025 winning artist, Arpita Akhanda; independent curator and writer, Manray Hsu; and Executive Director of Asia Art Archive, Özge Ersoy

About The Sovereign Art Foundation

The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) is an international charitable organisation founded in Hong Kong in 2003  with a dual mission: to promote and support contemporary artists, and to provide disadvantaged children with  access to the therapeutic benefits of art.

In 2004, SAF launched The Sovereign Asian Art Prize, now recognised as the most established and  prestigious art award in Asia-Pacific. The Prize provides artists with international recognition and financial  awards whilst raising funds through the sale of finalists’ works. Proceeds are split equally between the artists and SAF, which uses them to run and fund programmes that support disadvantaged children using expressive  arts. SAF expanded globally in 2021 with new professional prizes in Africa and Portugal.

In 2013, SAF launched Make It Better (MIB), an initiative that supports children from low-income backgrounds  and with special educational needs in Hong Kong. MIB works in local schools and community centres to offer  children a programme of expressive arts workshops designed to build self-esteem, confidence, self awareness and interpersonal skills. SAF also supports teachers, social workers and caregivers of these  children by introducing them to the therapeutic benefits of art.

SAF also runs art prizes for secondary-school students globally, reinforcing its belief in the importance of art in  the education system.
