Introspective observations of reality commingle with otherworldly visions in this singular small group show featuring Hannah Levin, Gwynna Dille, Hanna Jennings, Natsumi Goldfish, and Chandra Fang. The exhibit, on view at VillageOneArt through August 29, 2026, is rooted in a searching and insatiably whimsical exploration of the conscious and subconscious through paintings and mixed-media works. Where Dille examines the ethereal underpinnings of our everyday experiences, Hannah Levin examines the ways in which we can pull about linear perspectives of the world around us to encounter our lived experiences from a new perspective. Where Jennings offers transformative approaches to objects we navigate in the built environment, such as furniture and architecture, Natsumi Goldfish probes the multiplicities found in the interstitial space blending urban and rural, presence and absence, by foregrounding objects such as windows where the boundary between self and other exists but is visually permeable.
Viewers encounter the perceptive humor that Goldfish infuses into her paintings with works such as “Window to the Summer (Cat Guardians)”, which features two feline companions observing a present yet implied figure existing outside of the composition, with window blinds topped by reflected clouds topping off the tableau. The melange of inside and outside, exclusion and inclusion grounds the painting in a harmonious continuum. In Levin’s “Make Room” series of work, a bed seemingly expands upward along the sides of an interior wall, inhabiting multiple perspectives and stretching the narrative of the otherwise ordinary scene being depicted. Dille, meanwhile, offers interiors that adopt unorthodox approaches to color and line, offering the viewer an unsteady narration of interior scenes informed by her interest in Medieval manuscripts and codices: the artist works with unique materials such as silver and gold leaf to lend her paintings of otherwise candid scenes an almost sacred sensibility. Hanna Jennings infuses her paintings with an opaque, non-linear quality of observation, presenting a complex layering of color washes and brushstrokes that expertly oscillate between abstraction and figuration.
An almost alchemical sense of transformation and perspectival shift saturates this inimitable group exhibition, presenting these new scions of painting as women rising through the ranks of the New York art world – and beyond. On view from July 23 – August 29 only, this exhibition is the show of the summer for all who are intrigued by painting and mixed media on the precipice of painting tinged with a hint of magical realist insights.
