Evoking Peculiarity Through Painting, New York-Based Artist Xiangni Song

Xiangni Song is an artist based in both Beijing and New York whose work draws from daily observations and personal experiences. Initially trained in illustration at the School of Visual Arts, she later transitioned to fine art, pursuing an MFA in Fine Arts at Pratt Institute. Over the past two years, she has explored a variety of mediums, creating both two-dimensional works and sculptures. Primarily focused on painting, drawing and ceramics, her practice delves into themes of identity, self-reflection, and the boundless power of imagination.

Thanks for being here, Xiangni. To start, could you share a bit about your background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I began receiving formal art education in high school at Zhongyang Industrial Art College Affiliated Middle School in Beijing, China, which later became part of Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts & Design. After graduating in 2016, I moved to New York to pursue a BFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, followed by a Master’s in Fine Arts Painting and Drawing from Pratt Institute, graduating in 2022.

Despite growing up in an artistic and academic family, I was aware of the challenges of pursuing an art career. The drawing began as my hobby. Initially, my style was influenced by manga and cartoons; my art was straightforward and journal-like, but over time, I started exploring deeper emotional expressions through my work. I honed my techniques by experiencing different mediums and focusing on art history movements like Impressionism, Modernism, and German Expressionism. 

My artistic intention is to create paintings that evoke a sense of peculiarity. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources such as novels, folktales, and films, my work delves into the intricate relationship between humans and animals, as well as themes of gender, sexuality, and personal identity.

The strange and vibrant scenes depicted in my paintings are largely influenced by dreams, memories, and life experiences. In terms of style, I draw inspiration from animation, cartoons, and illustrations. Recognizing that human perception differs from that of a camera lens, I aim to capture the imagery that exists solely within my mind. As a result, my paintings often contain distorted forms, unconventional spatial arrangements, and exaggerated proportions of both figures and objects. By combining my imagination with keen observation, I strive to create a visual language that challenges conventional notions of reality and invites viewers to explore the depths of their perceptions.

Your use of vivid colors is striking. What draws you to them, and how did they become such a defining element of your work?

The color palette I use is influenced by German Expressionism. Rather than planning my colors ahead of time, I prefer to let the process guide me, allowing intuition to shape the final result. 

How does your multimedia experience intersect and influence your overall approach? 

My experiences with various mediums have deepened my understanding of shapes in space and sparked new avenues for expression. These diverse practices not only open up fresh possibilities in my work but also offer new ways of seeing and perceiving the art around me.

What does “community” mean to you? How do you see your role within it, both as an artist and as an individual?

To me, the art community is a vibrant and diverse network of individuals who share a passion for creativity, expression, and exploration. The community fosters collaboration, support, and growth, whether through critique, inspiration or simply sharing experiences. A place where artists feel seen, supported, and connected. 

Have there been any pivotal moments or challenges that have shaped the way you create today?

Two major pivotal moments in my journey have been establishing my art foundation in high school and coming to New York to further my studies in the arts. The unwavering support and encouragement from my family, schools, and friends have played an important role in shaping who I am today and have been instrumental in my growth as an artist.

Do you have any advice that you would offer to others?

Follow your instincts and stay true to what feels right for you. Trust and faith will guide you to where you should be.
